The story about the life and works of Knut Hamsun is like an old-fashioned fairy-tale. It’s a fairy-tale about the talented but poor boy from the country that toiled, starved and battled his way forward and after many trials and tribulations won fame as one of the world’s leading poets.
In 1862, the summer during which Knut turned three, he moved together with his family from the valley of Gudbrandsdalen to Hamsund. Along the paths on this small farm, young Knut began to find his way in the world. His close relationship to the culture and nature in his native village has made a clear impression in his literary works.
In Hamsund, you can visit the house in which Hamsun grew up, which today houses a small museum containing artefacts linked to the author and his family. You can go on a guided tour, walk on the paths in the garden or buy a book in the museum shop and find a quiet place to read in the house or on a bench in the garden. This is the perfect place to become better acquainted with the environment and landscape Hamsun often returned to in his works and recollections.
