Hamarøy War Memorial Museum

Emphasis is on the building of the railway, Prisoners of War and assisting displaced persons to cross the border during World War II.

Hamarøy War Memorial Museum opened on 26.06.04 and is run by a society. It details wartime events here through installations and exhibitions.

The museum’s focus is on the building of the railway line, Russian Prisoners of War and the assisting of displaced persons to cross the border to Sweden that took place here during World War II.

During the war years, the Germans placed considerable weight on building a railway line all the way to Kirkenes, but they did not accomplish this.

Enthusiasts will find more remains of this work here in Hamarøy, most of which is within walking distance of serviceable roads.

Huge projects were commenced here to construct a wharf and power station. Hundreds of barracks were constructed to house the thousands of Russian Prisoners of War who were transported here to work on the projects. Coastal fortifications were also built at Tysnes, Korsnes and Sørkil. You can find wartime concrete constructions and bunkers throughout this area. In short, anyone interested in wartime history should make a visit to the museum to gain an insight into the hard times here during the war.

The museum is open in summer from May to August or by prior arrangement.
