Arctic Wilderness Experience (AWE) is a small family-run company based in Hamarøy in Nordland, in a picturesque area surrounded by majestic mountains, fjords, tidal currents and a rich flora and fauna. Our wilderness experience covers more than 25 years in the Arctic. AWE`s base is situated at Finnøy, a 30-minute drive from the E6 at Innhavet.

Accommodation in a characteristic Nordland house
Experience the calmness and peace of mind in old timber walls and rustic charm. This three-bedroom historic Nordland house built in 1850 has a lot of character and sleeps up to nine people. Toilet and bathroom facilities are in an adjacent house. There is a gas stove and refrigerator in the kitchen and wood burners in the two lounges.

We serve delicious meals for up to 35 people around the open fire in our lavvu (Sami herdsmen’s tent) and have a full liquor licence.

Orca Tysfjord - Base camp for killer whale safaris in Norway
Orca Tysfjord has been arranging killer whale safaris since 1990, and is the pioneer in its field. We are proud to be able to welcome you to our killer whale safari, by large boat, inflatable dinghy or, if you are really ambitious, snorkelling amongst killer whales.

You're not a spectator, but part of a unique natural phenomenon. Welcome to a fantastic experience.

Tysfjord Tourist Centre
is a base camp for both the killer whale safari and research on this whale species in Norway. There is a “research centre” where the scientists work and make their material available to interested visitors.

Tysfjord is particularly well known for the large numbers of killer whales that come in from the ocean each autumn, hunting for the spring-breeding herrings, which winter in the depths of its waters. As well as killer whales, we also see white-tailed eagles on our safari tours. There are around 250 pairs in the area, which we regularly see flying down to get their claws into the herrings forced to the surface by the hunting killer whale packs.

The nature is spectacular here, north of the Arctic Circle. The days are short, but in the evenings, the Northern Lights often appear over the snow-covered mountains. At Tysfjord, which is around 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, the Northern Lights are often very strong in the autumn and winter. On a clear evening, the Northern Lights can appear in shades of green, yellow and red. Experiencing the colourful Northern Lights on a cold winter's evening is something you'll never forget, and Tysfjord is one of the best places in the world for observing them.

Steigen Tur offers accommodation in two new seaside holiday apartments situated in fantastic surroundings. The holiday apartments are fully equipped and features three bedrooms, private bathrooms. Each holiday house sleeps six guests and has space for up to two extra beds.

We have three new 19 ft Kaasbøll aluminium boats with 60 hp motors available for hire featuring echo sounder, GPS and mapper.

For those in search of a special experience in Steigen’s beautiful archipelago, we have sea kayaks and equipment available for hire.

If hiking in the mountains or lowland sounds tempting, you will find many options in the local area. If you climb high enough, you can take pleasure in fantastic views of the sea, mountains and cultural landscape.

We also hire cycles for shorter or longer trips. A cycle trip around the island is a wonderful experience. On a warm summer’s day you can stop for a rest and swim at Bø beach, a 1 km long beach on the western side of the island of Engeløya.
